Welcome to the New MCA Newsletter!
This is an attempt to get the Mississippi Chess
Association newsletter back off the ground and make it available as an
online publication.
We’re hoping to keep the membership up to date on
Mississippi, regional, national, and international chess news. We also want to help people improve
their game by presenting interesting games and helpful articles.

Opening Theory – Benko Gambit
By Douglas Stewart
Some gambits are more obvious than others. It can be especially hard to find a
sound gambit from the Black perspective.
In the Benko gambit, black sacrifices a pawn to get
positional pressure.
Here is a typical main line:
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 b5 4. cxb5 a6 5. bxa6 g6 6.
Nc3 Bxa6 7. e4 Bxf1 8. Kxf1 d6

Black is going to attack on the queenside, while White
will try to push through in the center without letting his queenside
collapse.

Linares Summary
By Douglas Stewart
Linares is a super-GM tournament held in Spain every
year. It is a double round robin
tournament, which means everyone plays each other twice, alternating
colors. It always attracts some of
the strongest players in the world and has been considered an unofficial
world championship.
This year the tournament was won by 23 year old GM
Peter Leko, who finished with 4 wins, 2 losses, and 6 draws.
One of the highlights of the tournament was 39 year
old (recently turned 40) GM Garry Kasparov getting beat by 15 year old GM
Teimour Radjabov.

Alabama Chess
By Douglas Stewart
The Alabama scene is pretty active right now. I’ve played in tournaments in
Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Tuskegee so far this year. There are a lot of A players (1800-1999)
that play in tournaments in Alabama, which makes for challenging
competition.
Here’s one of my recent games:
White: Douglas Stewart (1797)
Black: Chris Bond (1923)
