Opening Theory – Grunfeld Defense
By Douglas Stewart
A large class tournament isn’t always a kind place to
try out a new opening for the first time, but I did just that recently in
Biloxi at the Paul Morphy Open.
I had mixed results. I lost
one game and drew the other, although I wasn’t upset with my position out
of the opening in either one. What
was interesting is my opponents both avoided the main line: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4
Nf6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cd Nxd5 5. e4 Nxc3 6. bc Bg7 6. Bc4 c5
I came to the conclusion I would probably avoid this
opening against lower rated players and only play it against high rated
players. It is a solid opening, but
it makes things a little easy for White in the opening.

Mississippians Play – in Arkansas???
By
Douglas Stewart
I’ve played in tournaments in Pennsylvania,
California, New York, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, and
Mississippi, but I’ve never played in Arkansas before. I thought I’d give it a try at the
Little Rock Open May 17-18, figuring it I would probably get to play 5
people I’d never met before.

Mississippians Play – in Arkansas???
(continued)
First I played our MCA President Richard Crespo in the
first round, later in the day I got Mississippi super scholastic player
Bradley Denton, and then I played Chris Niggel the next day, whom I had met
when he played in (and won) the Mid-Mississippi Open in 1992. So much for meeting new people!
Seriously though, the location (Holiday Inn West) was
great and the tournament was very well run. I would definitely be willing to play there again despite the
long drive.
I left town empty handed, but my opponent in the game
below Bradley Denton managed a tie for 2nd in the entire
tournament with 4 points (3 wins, 2 draws).
